ROZ AVENT

Charcoal Drawings
2012-2013
In 2011 the number of people displaced by war, global warming and economic downturns rose sharply. Images of refugees reminded me of pictures I saw as a child of people on the move after the Second World War. Nothing had changed only now people were demonised for fleeing situations which we in our comfort can barely imagine. These people, in my mind,
are "everyman" struggling to find a way to safety. They are burdened with their past and homeland but pushed forward by their instinct for survival. In the back ground lurk shadowy onlookers who wield power and hold the fate of the travellers in their hands.
Roz Avent is an artist currently living in Central Victoria, Australia, who's work confronts the struggle to survive  and thrive in hostile environments. These environments might be psychological, physical or existential.
